What Happens at a Toddler Soccer Class? (A Peek Inside Our Soccer for Tots Classes)

If you've ever typed "toddler soccer classes near me" into your phone while your two-year-old bounced off the couch, you're in the right place. Most parents come to us with the same question: What does a toddler soccer class actually look like?

The honest answer? It looks like joyful, organized chaos. At Soccer Shots Los Angeles, every minute of our tots' classes is intentionally designed for how young children actually learn: through imagination, movement, and a whole lot of play.

Here's a peek inside a typical session.

First, a Little Context: This Is Not Youth Soccer Scaled Down

Before we walk through a class, it helps to understand its philosophy. Our toddler soccer program isn't about learning to play soccer the "right" way. It's about using soccer as a vehicle for early childhood development.

That means every activity, every game, and every coaching cue is designed around one question: what does this child need to grow right now?

The answer, at this age, is almost always the same: balance, coordination, listening skills, and a first positive experience in a group setting. Soccer just happens to be the perfect tool for all of it.

A Walkthrough of a Typical Toddler Soccer Class

Welcome & Warm-Up (5 Minutes)

Classes begin with a warm, familiar routine. Children arrive with their grown-upand are greeted by their coach by name. For toddlers, feeling seen and safe is what makes everything else possible.

The warm-up is simple and movement-based: stretching arms like a "soccer star," shaking out wiggles, and following along with the coach. It's not about perfect form. It's about signaling to little bodies and minds that we're here, we're moving, and this is going to be fun.

What you'll see your child building: body awareness, listening skills, and following directions in a group.

The Theme of the Day: Imaginative Play Takes Center Stage

Soccer Shots themed classes look different from what you might expect.

One week it might be "Soccer Island," where kids are explorers navigating their way across the field, balancing on stepping stones (cones), crossing bridges (lines on the grass), and kicking the ball to reach the next destination. Another week, it's "Jungle Safari,” dribbling past animals, listening for the coach's call, and "rescuing" their ball from the lion's den.

Why imaginative play? Because toddlers don't think in drills. Their brains are wired for stories and pretend play. When a child believes they're crossing a rickety bridge on Soccer Island, they're engaged, balancing carefully, and completely present. Motor skill development happens naturally because they're invested in the adventure.

What you'll see your child building: coordination, spatial awareness, creative thinking, joy of movement.

Parent & Me Moments: You're Part of the Class

For our youngest participants, especially children aged 18 months to 2 years, parents and caregivers are active participants. Our parent-and-me soccer format means you'll be right there alongside your child, modeling movements, offering gentle encouragement, and helping them feel grounded when the group gets a little overwhelming. What a unique opportunity for families to build connection through movement.

As children grow more confident over the weeks, you'll naturally find yourself stepping back.  This progression is rewarding for parents and coaches alike.

What you'll see your child building: confidence, emotional regulation, comfort in group settings.

Short Bursts, Big Impact: How We Design for Short Attention Spans

If you've spent any time with a two-year-old, you already know: attention spans are short, and that's completely normal. Our classes are prepared for this.

Rather than one long activity, each 45-minute class moves through a series of short, varied games, lasting just a few minutes before transitioning to something new. A kicking game turns into  a dribbling adventure, which in turn becomes a group gathering activity, then  a rest and water break, and back to soccer and play.

This rhythm does a few things. It keeps energy high without creating overwhelm. It gives children repeated opportunities to practice the same fundamental skills (like kicking toward a target, or stopping the ball on a cue) in different, engaging contexts. And it means even the child who loses focus during one activity gets a fresh start moments later.

Structure and freedom work together here: there's a clear plan behind every session, but the way it unfolds always follows the children's lead.

What you'll see your child building: focus, transition skills, resilience, and fundamentals through repetition.

Cool-Down & Goodbye Ritual (5 Minutes)

Every class ends the same way: a cool-down that brings the group back together, followed by a brief celebration of the day. For toddlers, closing rituals help the transition out of class feel safe and predictable. The goodbye circle provides  a sense of accomplishment, which sets the tone for the next week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to join the the class? For children 18 months to approximately 2.5 years, yes — parents participate alongside their child. As children develop confidence, the transition to independent participation happens naturally.

What should my child wear? Comfortable athletic clothes and closed-toe shoes. Cleats or shin guards are not required for our youngest classes. Remember to pack a water bottle and wear plenty of sunscreen.
